A Winter Wedding in Banff: Angela and Jeff’s Elegant Mountain Celebration
Angela & Jeff
Angela and Jeff’s wedding was the kind of day that reminds you why Banff is one of the most magical places to get married in Canada. Set in the heart of the Rockies, their celebration blended timeless elegance with cozy winter charm. As their photographer and videographer, I had the honour of capturing every layered detail—from the quiet morning moments at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel to the mountaintop ceremony at the Banff Gondola, and their joyful reception at Sky Bistro.
Angela and Jeff’s wedding embodied exactly what so many couples dream of when planning a destination wedding in Banff: stunning scenery, heartfelt moments, and a laid-back yet classy vibe that made everyone feel right at home.
Meet the Couple: Angela & Jeff
Angela, a no-nonsense veterinary technician from Minnesota, and Jeff, a warm-hearted pilot, met on Hinge while Jeff was training in her home state. What started with a casual meetup blossomed into a strong, adventurous relationship—fueled by a love for nature, hiking, and exploring U.S. national parks together.
Describing themselves as independent and resilient, these two have navigated life’s challenges as a team. Their dream wedding? A once-in-a-lifetime mountain-top celebration with the people they love. And that’s exactly what they created in Banff.
Getting Ready at the Iconic Fairmont Banff Springs
The day began with both Angela and Jeff getting ready at the historic Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. Angela got ready solo, surrounded by soft morning light pouring into her suite—perfect for photographing the details of her stunning, timeless gown. Jeff shared his prep with his dad, who helped him with his tie. One of the most touching moments of the day came early on, as Angela and Jeff stood back-to-back outside the hotel, reading private vows to each other before their first look. When they turned to see each other for the first time, it was emotional, heartfelt, and beautiful to witness.
Portraits in Banff’s Winter Wonderland
After their first look, we explored Banff for portraits. Snowcapped mountains framed the couple perfectly, and despite it being December, the temperature was surprisingly mild—ideal for cozy portraits with the town’s dreamy winter backdrop.
Mountaintop Ceremony at the Banff Gondola & Sky Bistro
The couple and their guests made their way up Sulphur Mountain via the Banff Gondola for the ceremony on the Peak Patio. With sunset casting a soft glow over the surrounding Rockies, Angela and Jeff exchanged vows in front of their closest family and friends—many of whom had traveled long distances to celebrate with them.
Following the ceremony, cocktail hour kicked off inside Sky Bistro, where guests sipped espresso martinis (a favourite of the couple’s) and warmed up from the mountain chill. The interior featured a surprise art installation of starry night projections, creating a moody and magical setting for evening portraits and dancing.
Reception & Celebrations
Dinner and speeches took place as the sun fully set over the mountains. Angela gave a heartfelt toast thanking guests for making the journey, and the evening carried on with live music and laughter. The couple's priorities—candid moments, great food, and dancing with loved ones—shone through. From the carefully designed table settings to the festive energy on the dance floor, the whole evening felt warm, scenic, and elegant.
Tips for Planning a Winter Wedding in Banff
If you're planning a wedding in Banff or anywhere in the Rockies, here are a few key takeaways from Angela and Jeff's day:
Leverage the light: Winter daylight is soft and flattering—perfect for photography. Schedule couple portraits for mid-afternoon to catch the best light before the early sunset. And be sure to grab some photos of the night sky!
Choose versatile venues: The combination of the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel and Sky Bistro offered classic architecture, convenience, and incredible mountain views all in one.
Consider transportation: The Banff Gondola added a fun and memorable experience for guests. Be sure to build in time for the upload and download process.
Add personal touches: Espresso martinis, custom vow readings, and artistic installations helped make this day feel truly “them.”
Work with a photo/video team who knows the area: As someone who frequently shoots in Banff and throughout the Rockies, I can help couples plan timing, locations, and even backup weather options.
